New partnership between The Kings Foundation and Congress of Polish Student Societies in Oxford.
About the Congress
The Congress of Polish Student Societies in the UK is the largest annual initiative uniting Polish students in the UK. The event principally aims to bring together Polish students to discuss current matters pertinent to Polish politics, business, economics, culture and education. The Congress is however equally known for its social dimension of networking and serving as a forum for exchanging experiences and ideas for the future development of Polish student societies in the UK. The principle at the heart of our work – promoting Polish culture – makes the Congress a unique cultural experience for both Polish and foreign guests.
Over the years we have had the pleasure of hosting speakers such as former President of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski, Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski, European Commissioner Danuta Hübner and Oxford professor of political philosophy Zbigniew Pełczyński. The Congress is organised under the indispensable patronage of institutions such as the Office of the President of Poland, the European Commission, and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since its launch in 2007, the annual Congress has in turn been hosted by students at the universities of Oxford (2008), London (2009), Glasgow (2010), Cambridge (2011), Edinburgh (2012), Warwick (2013). This year, we are thrilled to see the Congress return under the organisational auspices of
the Oxford University Polish Society.
This year’s Congress
The 7th edition of the Congress will take place on the weekend of 8th-9th March 2014 at the Oxford Union, home to the world’s most prestigious debating society.
As Poland enters its 10th year in the European Union, the overarching theme of the Congress will be “Poland – 10 years in the EU”. We are proud to welcome minister Radosław Sikorski as our keynote speaker on the matter. We would like to reflect on the EU-Polish relations in the geopolitical, economic and business spheres. With the European elections coming up two months after the Congress, we will also discuss our civic role in the European community, especially as
Polish students in the UK. On a lighter note, this year’s additional insights will address Poland becoming a player in continental sports and culture.
The Congress is co-hosted by the Oxford Union. Established 189 years ago to promote debate and discussion, the Oxford Union has hosted world leaders in virtually every field, including former US Presidents Reagan, Nixon and Carter, Malcolm X, Michael Jackson, Mother Theresa, the Dalai Lama and more recently, Prime Minister David Cameron, Malala Yousafzai and even PSY. We hope to welcome students into the unique traditions of England’s oldest University, with an evening Oxford debate and our classic candle-lit dinner in one of our medieval halls.
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in London has extended its generous patronage over the initiative. With the indispensable help of our main corporate sponsor, McKinsey & Company, we aim to establish future networking and job opportunities for Polish students from the best UK universities. Our first official institutional partners include: Fundacja Edukacyjna Jana Karskiego, British Alumni Society Poland, New Eastern Europe, the Federation of Polish Students in the UK and several other press associates.
